Year 6 Serving Wimbledon Tea at Restore Hope Latimer

26th June 2014

On Wednesday 25th June, Year 6 went to Restore Hope Latimer (RHL) to serve afternoon tea to the elderly and disabled.

When they arrived the boys greeted them and the girls served them drinks.  We walked them down to the beautiful lake.  Some of us were given the responsibility to push their wheelchairs.  When they came back we served them afternoon tea and watched Wimbledon on the big screen.  Finally the raffle took place and we helped the guests choose their prizes.

All the Year 6s enjoyed the opportunity to give back to others rather than receiving.  We all worked hard and loved the challenge of starting conversations with strangers and getting to know them.

It was a challenging afternoon for them; it wasn’t always easy starting up conversations with the guests.  However, they did a grand job, never giving up and representing the school extremely well. It was a very proud moment for me to witness them making a positive contribution to the community and further developing a sense of responsibility.  Their actions supported our school ethos and values, and they put our Chenies Creed and Star Rules into action outside of the school environment.

Mrs Palfreman and I were overwhelmed by the compliments we received from guests and the carers yesterday, as well as the volunteers at RHL who have had a number of schools take part in this event this week.  The children made the day very special and helped create some great memories for some very vulnerable individuals.
